Concerning the founding of New Sarnath

To understand the reasons for the establishment of New Sarnath, one must have rudimentary knowledge of our kingdom's most recent history, and though all citizens we are of Ediran and children of his Imperial Majesty (Long may he reign!), the ignorance of the common man is without equal and perhaps it is best that such history again be recorded lest it be forgotten or worse, bastardized into heathen oral folklore.

For much of the last century the kingdom of Ediran has known little peace and even less ability to expanding its borders. Between incessant civil wars perpetrated by vile pretenders to the throne who were intent on denying the rightful King Edirais Meruin, father of the our current liege his Grand Imperial Majesty Ediros Meruin III (Long may he reign!), the throne and the threat of the invading Reavers of the West, every resource has been spent toward maintaining the status quo, often to the detriment of the realm.

That constant state of warfare finally ended with the restoration of the rightful Meruin dynasty from the accursed usurper house Lathruin and the crushing defeat by King Edirais, a master of both strategy and battlefield tactics, of the marauding Reavers, the so-called unbeatable Scourge of the Gods whom have hounded our borders and greater Azand for nearly two centuries.

With the enemies of the kingdom, both internal and external, finally defeated, the wise and just King Edirais was able to bring peace, prosperity, and most importantly, growth, back to Ediran. Many of the former Northern territories of the realm were honored to be re-admitted to the kingdom and those that weren't were subdued. Soon the might of Ediran was restored to its glory of old, before the subjugation of Sarnath, and with that mission accomplished, King Edirais died at the age of 76.

His son, his Grand Imperial Majesty Ediros Meruin III (Long may he reign!) again decided to expand the great kingdom of Ediran, but this time to places we have never been and he turned his eyes to the ruins of Doomed Sarnath, a place of wealth and might, a place that at its height was truly worthy of a king.

Many in his court counseled against the retaking of Doomed Sarnath, but they spoke out of fear and superstition as they knew not a king's infallible courage or wisdom. They were rightfully ignored and so the reclamation of Sarnath began.

Unknown to King Ediros, another so-called king had turned his gaze toward Sarnath, but his eyes were drawn not by concern and love for his people but by unadulterated avarice and the ramblings of a madman. I speak of the Bandit King Ursuul. Not all of the Reavers simply raided and left with the tides, but some had the audacity to colonize the Northwestern region our continent, seemingly living in peace but only waiting for the time to continue their terror upon the realms of civilized men.

At his right hand stood the heretical "prophet" of the Forgotten Pantheon, the foreign madman who was exiled from the kingdom of Ediran before his vile teachings could take root, Abdul Alhazred. The Prophet whispered his insane ramblings of the glory of the lost gods restored, of the Bandit King being their champion and Doomed Sarnath their capitol, and the so-called king believed him.

As such nearly 12 years ago today as the time this manuscript is being penned, the forces of our Imperial Majesty and the heathen tribes met both outside and inside Doomed Sarnath. Like his father before him, King Ediros drove the scourge from our lands and in the Low Fane of the Forgotten Pantheon King Ediros himself defeated the Bandit King Ursuul in single combat but in an almost unfathomable display of mercy allowed the broken king to flee with his broken army back to their lands.

There the once Bandit King schemes, supposedly with the Mad Prophet still at his side, but he is no one's king anymore. The tribes follow strength and his was shown to be false.

From that date it took three years to cleanse city of its accumulated filth and make it inhabitable for the citizens of Ediran, but now the mines are again open and knowledge once thought lost to the ages is again being found. The work of restoring the city, of making it a worthy capitol for his Grand Imperial Majesty Ediros Meruin III (Long may he reign!) continues.

Though tales reach us of the growing wars and the fall of nations in the northern lands of Eimui, the Kingdom of Ediran no longer simply endures, but flourishes. The beginning of a renaissance is upon us and the glory of Ediran grows brighter now than it has in centuries. May that glory shine eternally! [End of Excerpt]
